As an amateur baker I’m often intimidated by many bread recipes that I see but this is incredibly easy and delivers perfect results every time. This is a simple way to wow your friends for any BBQ or cook-out.
This recipe was originally adapted from this King Arthur Flour recipe. Their site has a great collection of recipes, tips and ideas for home bakers.
While I prefer a traditional style hamburger bun with sesame seeds, you can easily leave them plain (don’t skip the butter though) or swap out the sesame seeds for other toppings like poppy seeds, dried onion or everything bagel topping.

- Dough
1 cup Warm Water
2 tbsp Butter (room temperature)
1 Egg
3 1/2 cups Flour
1/4 cup Sugar
1 1/4 tsp Salt
1 tbsp Instant Yeast
- Topping
Sesame seeds (optional)
3 tbsp Butter (melted)
Directions
- Mix all of the dough ingredients in a large bowl until it becomes a soft, smooth ball of dough. You can use a stand mixer but I prefer to mix by hand.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside someplace warm to rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until it’s nearly doubled in size.
- Gently press down on the dough to degas and divide it into equal 8 pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball and then flatten each ball into the shape of a bun. Place the buns on parchment-lined baking sheet and cover for a second rise for an hour. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees during the second rise.
- Brush the buns with about half of the melted butter and coat with sesame seeds if using.
- Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden. Remove them from the oven, and brush with the remaining melted butter.
- Cool the buns on a baking rack before serving.
